           AfterhisfirstvisittothebankoverwhichAddisonpresided,andaninformaldinneratthelatter’shome,CowperwoodhaddecidedthathedidnotcaretosailunderanyfalsecolorssofarasAddisonwasconcerned.Hewastooinfluentialandwellconnected.Besides,Cowperwoodlikedhimtoomuch.Seeingthattheman’sleaningtowardhimwasstrong,inrealityafascination,hemadeanearlymorningcalladayortwoafterhehadreturnedfromFargo,whitherhehadgoneatMr.Rambaud’ssuggestion,onhiswaybacktoPhiladelphia,determinedtovolunteerasmoothpresentationofhisearliermisfortunes,andtrusttoAddison’sinteresttomakehimviewthematterinakindlylight.HetoldhimthewholestoryofhowhehadbeenconvictedoftechnicalembezzlementinPhiladelphiaandhadservedouthistermintheEasternPenitentiary.Healsomentionedhisdivorceandhisintentionofmarryingagain.

           Addison,whowastheweakermanofthetwoandyetforcefulinhisownway,admiredthiscourageousstandonCowperwood’spart.Itwasabraverthingthanhehimselfcouldorwouldhaveachieved.Itappealedtohissenseofthedramatic.Herewasamanwhoapparentlyhadbeendraggeddowntotheverybottomofthings,hisfaceforcedinthemire,andnowhewascomingupagainstrong,hopeful,urgent.ThebankerknewmanyhighlyrespectedmeninChicagowhoseearlycareers,ashewaswellaware,wouldnotbeartoocloseaninspection,butnothingwasthoughtofthat.Someofthemwereinsociety,somenot,butallofthemwerepowerful.
