A Matter of Tunnels

           ThequestionofSohlbergadjustedthussimply,ifbrutally,CowperwoodturnedhisattentiontoMrs.Sohlberg.Buttherewasnothingmuchtobedone.HeexplainedthathehadnowcompletelysubduedAileenandSohlberg,thatthelatterwouldmakenomoretrouble,thathewasgoingtopensionhim,thatAileenwouldremainpermanentlyquiescent.Heexpressedthegreatestsolicitudeforher,butRitawasnowsickenedofthistangle.Shehadlovedhim,asshethought,butthroughtherageofAileenshesawhiminadifferentlight,andshewantedtogetaway.Hismoney,plentifulasitwas,didnotmeanasmuchtoherasitmighthavemeanttosomewomen;itsimplyspelledluxuries,withoutwhichshecouldexistifshemust.Hischarmforherhad,perhaps,consistedmostlyintheatmosphereofflawlesssecurity,whichseemedtosurroundhimaglitteringbubbleofromance.That,byonefellattack,wasnowburst.Hewasseentobequiteasothermen,subjecttothesamestorms,thesamedangerofshipwreck.Onlyhewasabettersailorthanmost.Sherecuperatedgradually;leftforhome;leftforEurope;detailstoolongtobenarrated.Sohlberg,aftermuchmeditatingandfuming,finallyacceptedtheofferofCowperwoodandreturnedtoDenmark.Aileen,afterafewdaysofquarreling,inwhichheagreedtodispensewithAntoinetteNowak,returnedhome.

           Cowperwoodwasinnowisepleasedbythisroughdenouement.Aileenhadnotraisedherownattractionsinhisestimation,andyet,strangetorelate,hewasnotunsympatheticwithher.
