Itwasduringtheyearthatfollowedtheirsocialrepudiation,andthenextandthenext,thatCowperwoodachievedakeenrealizationofwhatitwouldmeantospendtherestofhisdaysinsocialisolation,oratleastconfinedinhissourcesofentertainmenttoacircleorelementwhichconstantlyremindedhimofthefactthathewasnotidentifiedwiththebest,or,atleast,notthemostsignificant,howeverdullthatmightbe.WhenhehadfirstattemptedtointroduceAileenintosocietyitwashisideathat,howevertametheymightchancetofindittobeginwith,theythemselves,onceadmitted,couldmakeitintosomethingveryinterestingandevenbrilliant.SincethetimetheCowperwoodshadbeenrepudiated,however,theyhadfounditnecessary,iftheywishedanysocialdiversionatall,tofallbackuponsuchvariousminorelementsastheycouldscrapeanacquaintancewith—passingactorsandactresses,towhomoccasionallytheycouldgiveadinner;artistsandsingerswhomtheycouldinvitetothehouseupongaininganintroduction;and,ofcourse,anumberofthesociallyunimportant,suchastheHaatstaedts,Hoecksemas,Videras,Baileys,andothersstillfriendlyandwillingtocomeinacasualway.Cowperwoodfounditinterestingfromtimetotimetoinviteabusinessfriend,aloverofpictures,orsomeyoungartisttothehousetodinnerorfortheevening,andontheseoccasionsAileenwasalwayspresent.TheAddisonscalledorinvitedthemoccasionally.
