ThemostseriousdifficultyconfrontingCowperwoodfromnowonwasreallynotsomuchpoliticalasfinancial.InbuildingupandfinancinghisChicagostreet-railwayenterpriseshehad,inthosedayswhenAddisonwaspresidentoftheLakeCityNational,usedthatbankashischiefsourceofsupply.Afterward,whenAddisonhadbeenforcedtoretirefromtheLakeCitytoassumechargeoftheChicagoTrustCompany,Cowperwoodhadsucceededinhavingthelatterdesignatedasacentralreserveandininducinganumberofruralbankstokeeptheirspecialdepositsinitsvaults.However,sincethewaronhimandhisinterestshadbeguntostrengthenthroughtheeffortsofHandandArneel—menmostinfluentialinthecontroloftheothercentral-reservebanksofChicago,andinclosetouchwiththemoneybaronsofNewYork—thereweresignsnotwantingthatsomeofthecountrybanksdepositingwiththeChicagoTrustCompanyhadbeeninducedtowithdrawbecauseofpressurefromoutsideinimicalforces,andthatmoreweretofollow.ItwassometimebeforeCowperwoodfullyrealizedtowhatanextentthisfinancialoppositionmightbedirectedagainsthimself.InitsverybeginningitnecessitatedspeedyhurryingstoNewYork,Philadelphia,Cincinnati,Baltimore,Boston—evenLondonattimes—onthechancethattherewouldbelooseandreadycashinsomeone’spossession.Itwasononeoftheseperegrinationsthatheencounteredacuriouspersonalitywhichledtovariouscomplicationsinhislife,sentimentalandotherwise,whichhehadnothithertocontemplated.
