           SincethedaysinwhichAileenhadbeenleftmoreorlesslonelybyCowperwood,however,notwoindividualshadbeenmorefaithfulintheirattentionsthanTaylorLordandKentMcKibben.Bothwerefondofherinageneralway,findingherinterestingphysicallyandtemperamentally;but,beingbeholdentothemagnateformanyfavors,theywereexceedinglycircumspectintheirattitudetowardher,particularlyduringthoseearlyyearsinwhichtheyknewthatCowperwoodwasintenselydevotedtoher.Latertheywerenotsocareful.

           ItwasduringthislatterperiodthatAileencamegradually,throughtheagencyofthesetwomen,toshareinaformofmid-worldlifethatwasnotutterlydull.Ineverylargecitythereisakindofsocialhalfworld,whereartistsandthemoreadventurousofthesociallyunconventionalandrestlessmeetforanexchangeofthingswhichcannotbecountedmeresocialformandcivility.Itistheage-oldworldofBohemia.Hitherresortthose"accidentals"offancythatmakethestage,thedrawing-room,andalltheschoolsofartisticendeavorinterestingorpeculiar.InanumberofstudiosinChicagosuchasthoseofLaneCrossandRheesCrier,suchlittlecirclesweretobefound.RheesCrier,forinstance,apurelyparlorartist,withalltheairs,conventions,andsocialadaptabilityofthetribe,hadquiteafollowing.HereandtoseveralotherplacesbyturnsTaylorLordandKentMcKibbenconductedAileen,bothaskingandobtainingpermissiontobeciviltoherwhenCowperwoodwasaway.
