Itisasadcommentaryonallsavethemostchemicunions—thosedarkredflowersofromancethatbloommostoftenonlyforatragicend—thattheycannotendurethestormsofdisasterthatarewonttoovertakethem.AwomanlikeRitaSohlberg,withaseeminglyurgentfeelingforCowperwood,wasyetnotsocharmedbyhimbutthatthisshocktoherpridewasamarkedsedative.Thecrushingweightofsuchanexposureasthis,theHomericlaughterinherent,ifnotindicatedinthefaultyplanning,thefailuretotakeintoaccountbeforehandallthepossibilitieswhichmightleadtosuchadisaster,wastoomuchforhertoendure.Shewasstungalmosttodesperation,maddened,atthethoughtofthegay,idlewayinwhichshehadwalkedintoMrs.Cowperwood’sclutchesandbeenmadeintoaspectacleandalaughing-stockbyher.Whatabruteshewas—whatademon!Herownphysicalweaknessunderthecircumstanceswasnogrieftoher—ratherasalvetohersuperiordisposition;butjustthesameshehadbeenbadlybeaten,herbeautyturnedintoaragamuffinshow,andthatwasenough.Thisevening,intheLakeShoreSanitarium,whereshehadbeentaken,shehadbutonethought—togetawaywhenitshouldallbeoverandrestherweariedbrain.ShedidnotwanttoseeSohlberganymore;shedidnotwanttoseeCowperwoodanymore.AlreadyHarold,suspiciousanddeterminedtogetatthetruth,wasbeginningtoquestionherastothestrangenessofAileen’sattack—herprobablereason.
