Likethegassituation,theChicagostreet-railwaysituationwasdividedintothreeparts—threecompaniesrepresentingandcorrespondingwiththethreedifferentsidesordivisionsofthecity.TheChicagoCityRailwayCompany,occupyingtheSouthSideandextendingasfarsouthasThirty-ninthStreet,hadbeenorganizedin1859,andrepresentedinitselfamineofwealth.Alreadyitcontrolledsomeseventymilesoftrack,andwasannuallybeingaddedtoonIndianaAvenue,onWabashAvenue,onStateStreet,andonArcherAvenue.Itownedoveronehundredandfiftycarsoftheold-fashioned,straw-strewn,no-stovetype,andoveronethousandhorses;itemployedonehundredandseventyconductors,onehundredandsixtydrivers,ahundredstablemen,andblacksmiths,harness-makers,andrepairersininterestingnumbers.Itssnow-plowswerebusyonthestreetinwinter,itssprinkling-carsinsummer.Cowperwoodcalculateditsshares,bonds,rolling-stock,andotherphysicalpropertiesastotalinginthevicinityofovertwomilliondollars.ThetroublewiththiscompanywasthatitsoutstandingstockwasprincipallycontrolledbyNormanSchryhart,whowasnowdecidedlyinimicaltoCowperwood,oranythinghemightwishtodo,andbyAnsonMerrill,whohadnevermanifestedanysignsoffriendship.
