InthiscrisisitwastothehomeoftheCalligansthatAileenturnedinthought.Ifherfatherreallywasnotnicetoher,andshehadtoleavehomeforatime,shecouldgototheCalligans.Theywouldreceiveherandsaynothing.TheywerenotsufficientlywellknowntotheothermembersoftheButlerfamilytohavethelattersuspectthatshehadgonethere.ShemightreadilydisappearintotheprivacyofCherryStreetandnotbeseenorheardofforweeks.ItisaninterestingfacttocontemplatethattheCalligans,likethevariousmembersoftheButlerfamily,neversuspectedAileenoftheleasttendencytowardawaywardexistence.Henceherflightfromherownfamily,ifitevercame,wouldbelaidmoretothedoorofatemperamentalpettishnessthananythingelse.
Ontheotherhand,insofarastheButlerfamilyasaunitwasconcerned,itneededAileenmorethansheneededit.Itneededthelightofhercountenancetokeepitappropriatelycheerful,andifshewentawaytherewouldbeadistinctgulfthatwouldnotsoonbeovercome.
