Avisionofhimhadcometoherbutanhourbeforeasshewasdressing.Inawayshehaddressedforhim.Shewasneverforgetfulofthetimeshehadlookedatherinaninterestedway.Hehadcommentedonherhandsonce.To-dayhehadsaidthatshelooked"stunning,"andshehadthoughthoweasyitwouldbetoimpresshimto-night—toshowhimhowtrulybeautifulshewas.
Shehadstoodbeforehermirrorbetweeneightandnine—itwasnine-fifteenbeforeshewasreallyready—andponderedoverwhatsheshouldwear.Thereweretwotallpier-glassesinherwardrobe—anundulylargepieceoffurniture—andoneinherclosetdoor.Shestoodbeforethelatter,lookingatherbarearmsandshoulders,hershapelyfigure,thinkingofthefactthatherleftshoulderhadadimple,andthatshehadselectedgarnetgartersdecoratedwithheart-shapedsilverbuckles.
