Thegrowthofapassionisaverypeculiarthing.Inhighlyorganizedintellectualandartistictypesitissooftenapttobeginwithkeenappreciationofcertainqualities,modifiedbymany,manymentalreservations.Theegoist,theintellectual,givesbutlittleofhimselfandasksmuch.Nevertheless,theloveroflife,maleorfemale,findinghimselforherselfinsympatheticaccordwithsuchanature,isapttogainmuch.
Cowperwoodwasinnatelyandprimarilyanegoistandintellectual,thoughblendedstronglytherewith,wasahumaneanddemocraticspirit.Wethinkofegoismandintellectualismascloselyconfinedtothearts.Financeisanart.Anditpresentstheoperationsofthesubtlestoftheintellectualsandoftheegoists.Cowperwoodwasafinancier.Insteadofdwellingontheworksofnature,itsbeautyandsubtlety,tohismaterialdisadvantage,hefoundahappymean,owingtotheswiftnessofhisintellectualoperations,wherebyhecould,intellectuallyandemotionally,rejoiceinthebeautyoflifewithoutinterferingwithhisperpetualmaterialandfinancialcalculations.Andwhenitcametowomenandmorals,whichinvolvedsomuchrelatingtobeauty,happiness,asenseofdistinctionandvarietyinliving,hewasbutnowbeginningtosuspectforhimselfatleastthatapartfrommaintainingorganizedsocietyinitspresentformtherewasnobasisforthisone-life,one-loveidea.
