ThismatterofthepardonofCowperwood,theexacttimeofit,waskeptasecretfromhim,thoughthefactthathewastobepardonedsoon,orthathehadaveryexcellentchanceofbeing,hadnotbeendenied—ratherhadbeenmademuchoffromtimetotime.Wingatehadkepthimaccuratelyinformedastotheprogressbeingmade,ashadSteger;butwhenitwasactuallyascertained,fromtheGovernor’sprivatesecretary,thatacertaindaywouldseethepardonhandedovertothem,Steger,Wingate,andWalterLeighhadagreedbetweenthemselvesthattheywouldsaynothing,takingCowperwoodbysurprise.Theyevenwentsofar—thatis,StegerandWingatedid—astoindicatetoCowperwoodthattherewassomehitchtotheproceedingsandthathemightnotnowgetoutsosoon.Cowperwoodwassomewhatdepressed,butproperlystoical;heassuredhimselfthathecouldwait,andthathewouldbeallrightsometime.Hewasrathersurprisedtherefore,oneFridayafternoon,toseeWingate,Steger,andLeighappearathiscelldoor,accompaniedbyWardenDesmas.
