Thosewhobyanypleasingcourtesyoffortune,accidentofbirth,inheritance,orthewisdomofparentsorfriends,havesucceededinavoidingmakingthatanathemaoftheprosperousandcomfortable,"amessoftheirlives,"willscarcelyunderstandthemoodofCowperwood,sittingrathergloomilyinhiscellthesefirstdays,wonderingwhat,inspiteofhisgreatingenuity,wastobecomeofhim.Thestrongesthavetheirhoursofdepression.Therearetimeswhenlifetothoseendowedwiththegreatestintelligence—perhapsmostlytothose—takesonasomberhue.Theyseesomanyphasesofitsdrearysubtleties.Itisonlywhenthesoulofmanhasbeenbuiltupintosomestrangeself-confidence,somecuriousfaithinitsownpowers,based,nodoubt,ontheactualpresenceofthesesamepowerssubtlyinvolvedinthebody,thatitfrontslifeunflinchingly.ItwouldbetoomuchtosaythatCowperwood’smindwasofthefirstorder.Itwassubtleenoughinallconscience—andinvolved,asiscommonwiththeexecutivelygreat,withastrongsenseofpersonaladvancement.Itwasapowerfulmind,turning,likeavastsearchlight,aglitteringrayintomanyadarkcorner;butitwasnotsufficientlydisinterestedtosearchtheultimatedark.Herealized,inaway,whatthegreatastronomers,sociologists,philosophers,chemists,physicists,andphysiologistsweremeditating;buthecouldnotbesureinhisownmindthat,whateveritwas,itwasimportantforhim.Nodoubtlifeheldmanystrangesecrets.Perhapsitwasessentialthatsomebodyshouldinvestigatethem.
