AstimewentonButlergrewmoreandmorepuzzledandrestiveastohisdutyinregardtohisdaughter.Hewassurebyherfurtivemannerandherapparentdesiretoavoidhim,thatshewasstillintouchwithCowperwoodinsomeway,andthatthiswouldbringaboutasocialdisasterofsomekind.HethoughtonceofgoingtoMrs.Cowperwoodandhavingherbringpressuretobearonherhusband,butafterwardshedecidedthatthatwouldnotdo.HewasnotreallypositiveasyetthatAileenwassecretlymeetingCowperwood,and,besides,Mrs.Cowperwoodmightnotknowofherhusband’sduplicity.HethoughtalsoofgoingtoCowperwoodpersonallyandthreateninghim,butthatwouldbeaseveremeasure,andagain,asintheothercase,helackedproof.Hehesitatedtoappealtoadetectiveagency,andhedidnotcaretotaketheothermembersofthefamilyintohisconfidence.Hedidgooutandscantheneighborhoodof931NorthTenthStreetonce,lookingatthehouse;butthathelpedhimlittle.Theplacewasforrent,Cowperwoodhavingalreadyabandonedhisconnectionwithit.
FinallyhehitupontheplanofhavingAileeninvitedtogosomewheresomedistanceoff—BostonorNewOrleans,whereasisterofhiswifelived.Itwasadelicatemattertoengineer,andinsuchmattershewasnotexactlythesouloftact;butheundertookit.
