           Inspiteofthefactthathermotherwasadressmaker,Mamie’sclothesneverlookedsmartorattractiveshewouldhavefeltoutofkeepingwithherselfiftheyhad.Hershoeswereratherlarge,andill-fitting;herskirthunginlifelesslinesfromherhipstoherfeet,ofgoodmaterialbutseeminglybaddesign.Atthattimethecolored"jersey,"so-called,wasjustcomingintopopularwear,and,beingclose-fitting,lookedwellonthoseofgoodform.AlasforMamieCalligan!Themodeofthetimecompelledhertowearone;butshehadneitherthearmsnorthechestdevelopmentwhichmadethisgarmentadmirable.Herhat,bychoice,wasusuallyapancakeaffairwithalong,singlefeather,whichsomehowneverseemedtobeinexactlytherightposition,eithertoherhairorherface.Atmosttimesshelookedalittleweary;butshewasnotphysicallywearysomuchasshewasbored.Herlifeheldsolittleofrealcharm;andAileenButlerwasunquestionablythemostsignificantelementofromanceinit.

           Mamie’smother’sverypleasantsocialdisposition,thefactthattheyhadaverycleanly,ifpoorlittlehome,thatshecouldentertainthembyplayingontheirpiano,andthatMrs.Calligantookanadoringinterestintheworkshedidforher,madeupthesumandsubstanceoftheattractionoftheCalliganhomeforAileen.
