           WhenCowperwoodreachedthejail,Jasperswasthere,gladtoseehimbutprincipallyrelievedtofeelthatnothinghadhappenedtomarhisownreputationasasheriff.Becauseoftheurgencyofcourtmattersgenerally,itwasdecidedtodepartforthecourtroomatnineo’clock.EddieZanderswasoncemoredelegatedtoseethatCowperwoodwasbroughtsafelybeforeJudgePaydersonandafterwardtakentothepenitentiary.Allofthepapersinthecasewereputinhiscaretobedeliveredtothewarden.

           "Isupposeyouknow,"confidedSheriffJasperstoSteger,"thatStenerishere.Heain’tgotnomoneynow,butIgavehimaprivateroomjustthesame.Ididn’twanttoputamanlikehiminnocell."SheriffJasperssympathizedwithStener.

           "That’sgood.That’sthewayitoughttobe,"repliedSteger.HewasgladforCowperwood’ssakethatthesheriffhadsomuchtact.EvidentlyGeorgeandthesheriffweregettingalonginaveryfriendlyway,foralltheformer’sbittertroublesandlackofmeans.

           TheCowperwoodpartywalked,thedistancenotbeinggreat,andastheydidsotheytalkedofrathersimplethingstoavoidthemoreserious.
