           Then,afterseveralyearsofthissecretrelationship,inwhichthetiesofsympathyandunderstandinggrewstrongerinsteadofweaker,camethestorm.Itburstunexpectedlyandoutofaclearsky,andborenorelationtotheintentionorvolitionofanyindividual.Itwasnothingmorethanafire,adistantonethegreatChicagofire,October7th,1871,whichburnedthatcityitsvastcommercialsectiontotheground,andinstantlyandincidentallyproducedafinancialpanic,viciousthoughofshortdurationinvariousothercitiesinAmerica.ThefirebeganonSaturdayandcontinuedapparentlyunabateduntilthefollowingWednesday.Itdestroyedthebanks,thecommercialhouses,theshippingconveniences,andvaststretchesofproperty.Theheaviestlossfellnaturallyupontheinsurancecompanies,whichinstantly,inmanycasesthemajorityclosedtheirdoors.ThisthrewthelossbackonthemanufacturersandwholesalersinothercitieswhohadhaddealingswithChicagoaswellasthemerchantsofthatcity.Again,verygrievouslosseswerebornebythehostofeasterncapitalistswhichhadforyearspastpartlyowned,orheldheavymortgageson,themagnificentbuildingsforbusinesspurposesandresidencesinwhichChicagowasalreadyrivalingeverycityonthecontinent.Transportationwasdisturbed,andthekeenscentofWallStreet,andThirdStreetinPhiladelphia,andStateStreetinBoston,instantlyperceivedintheearlyreportsthegravityofthesituation.
