DuringallthetimethatCowperwoodhadbeenbuildinghimselfupthussteadilythegreatwaroftherebellionhadbeenfoughtalmosttoitsclose.ItwasnowOctober,1864.ThecaptureofMobileandtheBattleoftheWildernesswerefreshmemories.GrantwasnowbeforePetersburg,andthegreatgeneraloftheSouth,Lee,wasmakingthatlastbrilliantandhopelessdisplayofhisabilityasastrategistandasoldier.Therehadbeentimes—as,forinstance,duringthelong,drearyperiodinwhichthecountrywaswaitingforVicksburgtofall,fortheArmyofthePotomactoprovevictorious,whenPennsylvaniawasinvadedbyLee—whenstocksfellandcommercialconditionswereverybadgenerally.IntimesliketheseCowperwood’sownmanipulativeabilitywastaxedtotheutmost,andhehadtowatcheveryhourtoseethathisfortunewasnotdestroyedbysomeunexpectedanddestructivepieceofnews.
Hispersonalattitudetowardthewar,however,andasidefromhispatrioticfeelingthattheUnionoughttobemaintained,wasthatitwasdestructiveandwasteful.HewasbynomeanssowantinginpatrioticemotionandsentimentbutthathecouldfeelthattheUnion,asithadnowcometobe,spreadingitsgreatlengthfromtheAtlantictothePacificandfromthesnowsofCanadatotheGulf,wasworthwhile.Sincehisbirthin1837hehadseenthenationreachthatphysicalgrowth—barringAlaska—whichitnowpossesses.
