           ThehomeatmospherewhichtheyestablishedwhentheyreturnedfromtheirhoneymoonwasagreatimprovementintasteoverthatwhichhadcharacterizedtheearlierlifeofMrs.CowperwoodasMrs.Semple.Theyhaddecidedtooccupyherhouse,onNorthFrontStreet,forawhileatleast.Cowperwood,aggressiveinhiscurrentartisticmood,hadobjectedatonceaftertheywereengagedtothespiritofthefurnitureanddecorations,orlackofthem,andhadsuggestedthathebeallowedtohaveitbroughtmoreinkeepingwithhisideaofwhatwasappropriate.Duringtheyearsinwhichhehadbeengrowingintomanhoodhehadcomeinstinctivelyintosoundnotionsofwhatwasartisticandrefined.Hehadseensomanyhomesthatweremoredistinguishedandharmoniousthanhisown.OnecouldnotwalkordriveaboutPhiladelphiawithoutseeingandbeingimpressedwiththegeneraltendencytowardamorecultivatedandselectivesociallife.Manyexcellentandexpensivehouseswerebeingerected.Thefrontlawn,withsomeattemptatfloralgardening,wasachievinglocalpopularity.InthehomesoftheTighes,theLeighs,ArthurRivers,andothers,hehadnoticedartobjectsofsomedistinctionbronzes,marbles,hangings,pictures,clocks,rugs.

           Itseemedtohimnowthathiscomparativelycommonplacehousecouldbemadeintosomethingcharmingandforcomparativelylittlemoney.
