Thedayspassed.OncetheunderstandingwithBonhagwasreached,Cowperwood’swife,motherandsisterwereallowedtoappearonoccasions.Hiswifeandthechildrenwerenowsettledinthelittlehomeforwhichhewaspaying,andhisfinancialobligationstoherweresatisfiedbyWingate,whopaidheronehundredandtwentyfivedollarsamonthforhim.Herealizedthatheowedhermore,buthewassailingratherclosetothewindfinancially,thesedays.ThefinalcollapseofhisoldinterestshadcomeinMarch,whenhehadbeenlegallydeclaredabankrupt,andallhispropertiesforfeitedtosatisfytheclaimsagainsthim.Thecity’sclaimoffivehundredthousanddollarswouldhaveeatenupmorethancouldhavebeenrealizedatthetime,hadnotaproratapaymentofthirtycentsonthedollarbeendeclared.Eventhenthecityneverreceiveditsdue,forbysomehocus-pocusitwasdeclaredtohaveforfeiteditsrights.Itsclaimshadnotbeenmadeatthepropertimeintheproperway.Thisleftlargerportionsofrealmoneyfortheothers.
FortunatelybynowCowperwoodhadbeguntoseethatbyalittleexperimentinghisbusinessrelationswithWingatewerelikelytoproveprofitable.Thebrokerhadmadeitclearthatheintendedtobeperfectlystraightwithhim.HehademployedCowperwood’stwobrothers,atverymoderatesalaries—onetotakecareofthebooksandlookaftertheoffice,andtheothertoacton‘changewithhim,fortheirseatsinthatorganizationhadneverbeensold.
