NotsomuchearlierthanhisyouthFloridahadbeenaddedtotheUnionbypurchasefromSpain;Mexico,aftertheunjustwarof1848,hadcededTexasandtheterritorytotheWest.TheboundarydisputesbetweenEnglandandtheUnitedStatesinthefarNorthwesthadbeenfinallyadjusted.Toamanwithgreatsocialandfinancialimagination,thesefactscouldnothelpbutbesignificant;andiftheydidnothingmore,theygavehimasenseoftheboundlesscommercialpossibilitieswhichexistedpotentiallyinsovastarealm.Hiswasnottheorderofspeculativefinancialenthusiasmwhich,inthetypeknownasthe"promoter,"seesendlesspossibilitiesforgainineveryunexploredrivuletandprairiereach;buttheveryvastnessofthecountrysuggestedpossibilitieswhichhehopedmightremainundisturbed.Aterritorycoveringthelengthofawholezoneandbetweentwoseas,seemedtohimtopossesspotentialitieswhichitcouldnotretainiftheStatesoftheSouthwerelost.
Atthesametime,thefreedomofthenegrowasnotasignificantpointwithhim.Hehadobservedthatracefromhisboyhoodwithconsiderableinterest,andhadbeenstruckwithvirtuesanddefectswhichseemedinherentandwhichplainly,tohim,conditionedtheirexperiences.
Hewasnotatallsure,forinstance,thatthenegroescouldbemadeintoanythingmuchmoresignificantthantheywere.Atanyrate,itwasalonguphillstruggleforthem,ofwhichmanyfuturegenerationswouldnotwitnesstheconclusion.
