           Forseveraldaysaftertheexcursionrelatedinthelastchapterwedidnotwanderfarfromourencampment,butgaveourselvesuptoformingplansforthefutureandmakingourpresentabodecomfortable.

           Therewerevariouscausesthatinducedthisstateofcomparativeinaction.Inthefirstplace,althougheverythingarounduswassodelightful,andwecouldwithoutdifficultyobtainallthatwerequiredforourbodilycomfort,wedidnotquiteliketheideaofsettlingdownherefortherestofourlives,farawayfromourfriendsandournativeland.Tosetenergeticallyaboutpreparationsforapermanentresidenceseemedsolikemakingupourmindstosayingadieutohomeandfriendsforeverthatwetacitlyshrankfromit,andputoffourpreparations,foronereasonandanother,aslongaswecould.Thentherewasalittleuncertaintystillastotherebeingnativesontheisland,andweentertainedakindoffainthopethatashipmightcomeandtakeusoff.Butasdayafterdaypassed,andneithersavagesnorshipsappeared,wegaveupallhopeofanearlydeliverance,andsetdiligentlytoworkatourhomestead.
