           ItwasquitearelieftoustobreathethepureairandtoenjoythegladsunshineafterourlongrambleintheDiamondCave,aswenamedit;foralthoughwedidnotstaymorethanhalf-an-houraway,itseemedtousmuchlonger.Whileweweredressing,andduringourwalkhome,wedidourbesttosatisfythecuriosityofpoorPeterkin,whoseemedtoregret,withlivelysincerity,hisinabilitytodive.

           Therewasnohelpforit,however,sowecondoledwithhimaswebestcould.Hadtherebeenanygreatriseorfallinthetideoftheseseas,wemightperhapshavefounditpossibletotakehimdownwithusatlowwater;butasthetideneverroseorfellmorethaneighteeninchesortwofeet,thiswasimpossible.

           Thispeculiarityofthetideitsslightriseandfallhadnotattractedourobservationtillsometimeafterourresidenceontheisland.Neitherhadweobservedanothercuriouscircumstanceuntilwehadbeensometimethere.Thiswasthefactthatthetideroseandfellwithconstantregularity,insteadofbeingaffectedbythechangesofthemoonasinourowncountry,andasitisinmostotherpartsoftheworldatleast,inallthosepartswithwhichIamacquainted.Everydayandeverynight,attwelveo’clockprecisely,thetideisatthefull;andatsixo’clock,everymorningandevening,itisebb.Icanspeakwithmuchconfidenceonthissingularcircumstance,aswetookparticularnoteofit,andneverfoundittoalter.
