           Nextdaythewood-cuttingpartywentashoreagain,andIaccompaniedthemasbefore.Duringthedinner-hourIwanderedintothewoodsalone,beingdisinclinedforfoodthatday.IhadnotrambledfarwhenIfoundmyselfunexpectedlyontheseashore,havingcrossedanarrowneckoflandwhichseparatedthenativevillagefromalargebay.HereIfoundapartyoftheislandersbusywithoneoftheirwar-canoes,whichwasalmostreadyforlaunching.Istoodforalongtimewatchingthispartywithgreatinterest,andobservedthattheyfastenedthetimbersandplankstoeachotherverymuchinthesamewayinwhichIhadseenJackfastenthoseofourlittleboat.Butwhatsurprisedmemostwasitsimmenselength,whichImeasuredcarefully,andfoundtobeahundredfeetlong;anditwassocapaciousthatitcouldhaveheldthreehundredmen.Ithadtheunwieldyoutriggerandenormouslyhighstern-postswhichIhadremarkedonthecanoethatcametouswhileIwasontheCoralIsland.Observingsomeboysplayingatgamesashortwayalongthebeach,Iresolvedtogoandwatchthem;butasIturnedfromthenativeswhowereengagedsobusilyandcheerfullyattheirwork,Ilittlethoughtoftheterribleeventthathungonthecompletionofthatwar-canoe.

           Advancingtowardsthechildren,whoweresonumerousthatIbegantothinkthismustbethegeneralplaygroundofthevillage,Isatdownonagrassybankundertheshadeofaplantain-treetowatchthem.AndahappierormorenoisycrewIhaveneverseen.
