           Ourcaptainwasmakingforoneoftheseopeningsthedaywewerewreckedandwouldhavereachedit,too,Idoubtnot,hadnottherudderbeentornaway.Withinthelagoonwereseveralpretty,lowcoralislands,justoppositeourencampment;andimmediatelybeyondthese,outatsea,layaboutadozenotherislands,atvariousdistances,fromhalf-a-miletotenmilesallofthem,asfaraswecoulddiscern,smallerthanoursandapparentlyuninhabited.Theyseemedtobelowcoralislands,raisedbutlittleabovethesea,yetcoveredwithcocoa-nuttrees.

           Allthiswenoted,andagreatdealmore,whilewesatonthetopofthemountain.Afterwehadsatisfiedourselveswepreparedtoreturn;buthere,again,wediscoveredtracesofthepresenceofman.Thesewereapoleorstaff,andoneortwopiecesofwoodwhichhadbeensquaredwithanaxe.Allofthesewere,however,verymuchdecayed,andtheyhadevidentlynotbeentouchedformanyyears.

           Fullofthesediscoveries,wereturnedtoourencampment.Onthewaywefellinwiththetracesofsomefour-footedanimal,butwhetheroldorofrecentdatenoneofuswereabletoguess.Thisalsotendedtoraiseourhopesofobtainingsomeanimalfoodontheisland;sowereachedhomeingoodspirits,quitepreparedforsupper,andhighlysatisfiedwithourexcursion.

           Aftermuchdiscussion,inwhichPeterkintookthelead,wecametotheconclusionthattheislandwasuninhabited,andwenttobed.
