           Wehadascertainedfromtheteacherthedirectiontothespotonwhichthebattlewastobefought,andafterawalkoftwohours,reachedit.Thesummitofabarehillwastheplacechosen;for,unlikemostoftheotherislanders,whoareaddictedtobush-fighting,thoseofMangoareinthehabitofmeetingonopenground.Wearrivedbeforethetwopartieshadcommencedthedeadlystruggle,andcreepingascloseupaswedaredamongtherocks,welayandwatchedthem.

           Thecombatantsweredrawnupfacetoface,eachsiderangedinrankfourdeep.Thoseinthefirstrowwerearmedwithlongspears;thesecondwithclubstodefendthespearmen;thethirdrowwascomposedofyoungmenwithslings;andthefourthconsistedofwomen,whocarriedbasketsofstonesfortheslingers,andclubsandspearswithwhichtosupplythewarriors.Soonafterwearrived,theattackwasmadewithgreatfury.Therewasnosciencedisplayed.Thetwobodiesofsavagesrushedheadlonguponeachotherandengagedinageneralmelee,andamoredreadfulsetofmenIhaveneverseen.Theyworegrotesquewar-caps,madeofvarioussubstancesanddecoratedwithfeathers.Theirfacesandbodieswerepaintedsoastomakethemlookasfrightfulaspossible;andastheybrandishedtheirmassiveclubs,leaped,shouted,yelled,anddashedeachothertotheground,IthoughtIhadneverseenmenlooksolikedemonsbefore.

           Weweremuchsurprisedattheconductofthewomen,whoseemedtobeperfectfuries,andhungabouttheheelsoftheirhusbandsinordertodefendthem.
