           Itwasabright,clear,beautifulmorningwhenwefirstlaunchedourlittleboatandrowedoutupontheplacidwatersofthelagoon.Notabreathofwindruffledthesurfaceofthedeep.Notacloudspottedthedeep-bluesky.Notasoundthatwasdiscordantbrokethestillnessofthemorning,althoughthereweremanysoundssweet,tiny,andmelodiousthatmingledintheuniversalharmonyofnature.ThesunwasjustrisingfromthePacific’samplebosom,andtippingthemountain-topswitharedglow.Theseawasshininglikeasheetofglass,yetheavingwiththelong,deepswellthat,alltheworldround,indicatesthelifeofOcean;andthebrightseaweedsandthebrilliantcoralsshoneinthedepthsofthatpellucidwater,aswerowedoverit,likerareandpreciousgems.Oh,itwasasightfittedtostirthesoulofmantoitsprofoundestdepths!andifheownedaheartatall,toliftthatheartinadorationandgratitudetothegreatCreatorofthismagnificentandgloriousuniverse!

           Atfirst,inthestrengthofourdelight,werowedhitherandthitherwithoutaimorobject.Butaftertheeffervescenceofourspiritswasabated,webegantolookaboutusandtoconsiderwhatweshoulddo.

           "Ivotethatwerowtothereef,"criedPeterkin.
