           Thereisapowerofenduranceinhumanbeings,bothintheirbodiesandintheirminds,which,Ihaveoftenthought,seemstobewonderfullyadaptedandexactlyproportionedtothecircumstancesinwhichindividualsmayhappentobeplacedapowerwhich,inmostcases,issufficienttocarryamanthroughandovereveryobstaclethatmayhappentobethrowninhispaththroughlife,nomatterhowhighorhowsteepthemountainmaybe,butwhichoftenforsakeshimthemomentthesummitisgained,thepointofdifficultypassed,andleaveshimprostrated,withenergiesgone,nervesunstrung,andafeelingofincapacitypervadingtheentireframethatrendersthemosttriflingeffortalmostimpossible.

           DuringthegreaterpartofthatdayIhadbeensubjectedtoseverementalandmuchphysicalexcitement,whichhadalmostcrushedmedownbythetimeIwasrelievedfromdutyinthecourseoftheevening.Butwhentheexpeditionwhosefailurehasjustbeennarratedwasplanned,myanxietiesandenergieshadbeensopowerfullyarousedthatIwentthroughtheprotractedscenesofthatterriblenightwithoutafeelingoftheslightestfatigue.Mymindandbodywerealikeactiveandfullofenergy.Nosoonerwasthelastthrillingfearofdangerpast,however,thanmyfacultieswereutterlyrelaxed;andwhenIfeltthecoolbreezesofthePacificplayingaroundmyfeveredbrow,andheardthefreewavesripplingattheschooner’sprow,asweleftthehatedislandbehindus,mysensesforsookme,andIfellinaswoonuponthedeck.
