           Ourfirstcare,afterbreakfast,wastoplacethefewarticleswepossessedinthecreviceofarockatthefartherendofasmallcavewhichwediscoverednearourencampment.Thiscave,wehoped,mightbeusefultousafterwardsasastorehouse.Thenwecuttwolargeclubsoffaspeciesofveryhardtreewhichgrewnearathand.OneofthesewasgiventoPeterkin,theothertome,andJackarmedhimselfwiththeaxe.Wetooktheseprecautionsbecausewepurposedtomakeanexcursiontothetopofthemountainsoftheinterior,inordertoobtainabetterviewofourisland.Ofcourseweknewnotwhatdangersmightbefallusbytheway,sothoughtitbesttobeprepared.

           Havingcompletedourarrangementsandcarefullyextinguishedourfire,wesalliedforthandwalkedashortdistancealongthesea-beachtillwecametotheentranceofavalley,throughwhichflowedtherivuletbeforementioned.Hereweturnedourbacksontheseaandstruckintotheinterior.

           Theprospectthatburstuponourviewonenteringthevalleywastrulysplendid.Oneithersideofustherewasagentleriseintheland,whichthusformedtworidges,aboutamileapart,oneachsideofthevalley.Theseridgeswhich,aswellasthelowgroundsbetweenthem,werecoveredwithtreesandshrubsofthemostluxuriantkindcontinuedtorecedeinlandforabouttwomiles,whentheyjoinedthefootofasmallmountain.
