Dashwood,urgedequallybyherownandherdaughter’swishes,begantotalkofremovingtoBarton.OnHERmeasuresdependedthoseofhertwofriends;Mrs.JenningscouldnotquitClevelandduringtheDashwoods’stay;andColonelBrandonwassoonbrought,bytheirunitedrequest,toconsiderhisownabodethereasequallydeterminate,ifnotequallyindispensable.AthisandMrs.Jennings’sunitedrequestinreturn,Mrs.Dashwoodwasprevailedontoaccepttheuseofhiscarriageonherjourneyback,forthebetteraccommodationofhersickchild;andtheColonel,atthejointinvitationofMrs.DashwoodandMrs.Jennings,whoseactivegood-naturemadeherfriendlyandhospitableforotherpeopleaswellasherself,engagedwithpleasuretoredeemitbyavisitatthecottage,inthecourseofafewweeks.
Thedayofseparationanddeparturearrived;andMarianne,aftertakingsoparticularandlengthenedaleaveofMrs.Jennings,onesoearnestlygrateful,sofullofrespectandkindwishesasseemedduetoherownheartfromasecretacknowledgmentofpastinattention,andbiddingColonelBrandonfarewellwithacordialityofafriend,wascarefullyassistedbyhimintothecarriage,ofwhichheseemedanxiousthatsheshouldengrossatleasthalf.Mrs.DashwoodandElinorthenfollowed,andtheotherswereleftbythemselves,totalkofthetravellers,andfeeltheirowndullness,tillMrs.Jenningswassummonedtoherchaisetotakecomfortinthegossipofhermaidforthelossofhertwoyoungcompanions;andColonelBrandonimmediatelyafterwardstookhissolitarywaytoDelaford.
