           Atbreakfastsheneitherate,norattemptedtoeatanything;andElinor’sattentionwasthenallemployed,notinurgingher,notinpityingher,norinappearingtoregardher,butinendeavouringtoengageMrs.Jennings’snoticeentirelytoherself.

           AsthiswasafavouritemealwithMrs.Jennings,itlastedaconsiderabletime,andtheywerejustsettingthemselves,afterit,roundthecommonworkingtable,whenaletterwasdeliveredtoMarianne,whichsheeagerlycaughtfromtheservant,and,turningofadeath-likepaleness,instantlyranoutoftheroom.Elinor,whosawasplainlybythis,asifshehadseenthedirection,thatitmustcomefromWilloughby,feltimmediatelysuchasicknessatheartasmadeherhardlyabletoholdupherhead,andsatinsuchageneraltremourasmadeherfearitimpossibletoescapeMrs.Jennings’snotice.Thatgoodlady,however,sawonlythatMariannehadreceivedaletterfromWilloughby,whichappearedtoheraverygoodjoke,andwhichshetreatedaccordingly,byhoping,withalaugh,thatshewouldfindittoherliking.
