           Whateverthetruthofitmightbe,andfarasElinorwasfromfeelingthoroughcontentmentaboutit,yetwhileshesawMarianneinspirits,shecouldnotbeveryuncomfortableherself.AndMariannewasinspirits;happyinthemildnessoftheweather,andstillhappierinherexpectationofafrost.

           ThemorningwaschieflyspentinleavingcardsatthehousesofMrs.Jennings’sacquaintancetoinformthemofherbeingintown;andMariannewasallthetimebusyinobservingthedirectionofthewind,watchingthevariationsoftheskyandimagininganalterationintheair.

           "Don’tyoufinditcolderthanitwasinthemorning,Elinor?Thereseemstomeaverydecideddifference.Icanhardlykeepmyhandswarmeveninmymuff.Itwasnotsoyesterday,Ithink.Thecloudsseempartingtoo,thesunwillbeoutinamoment,andweshallhaveaclearafternoon."

           Elinorwasalternatelydivertedandpained;butMariannepersevered,andsaweverynightinthebrightnessofthefire,andeverymorningintheappearanceoftheatmosphere,thecertainsymptomsofapproachingfrost.

           TheMissDashwoodshadnogreaterreasontobedissatisfiedwithMrs.Jennings’sstyleofliving,andsetofacquaintance,thanwithherbehaviourtothemselves,whichwasinvariablykind.Everythinginherhouseholdarrangementswasconductedonthemostliberalplan,andexceptingafewoldcityfriends,whom,toLadyMiddleton’sregret,shehadneverdropped,shevisitednoonetowhomanintroductioncouldatalldiscomposethefeelingsofheryoungcompanions.
