Nolegalproofofthiswasobtainable,butCowperwoodwasassumedtobeabriberonagiantscale.Bythenewspapercartoonshewasrepresentedasapiratecommanderorderinghismentoscuttleanothervessel—theshipofPublicRights.Hewaspicturedasathief,ablackmaskoverhiseyes,andasaseducer,throttlingChicago,thefairmaiden,whilehestoleherpurse.Thefameofthisbattlewasbynowbecomingworld-wide.InMontreal,inCapeTown,inBuenosAyresandMelbourne,inLondonandParis,menwerereadingofthissingularstruggle.Atlast,andtruly,hewasanationalandinternationalfigure.Hisoriginaldream,however,modifiedbycircumstances,hadliterallybeenfulfilled.
MeanwhilebeitadmittedthatthelocalelementsinfinancewhichhadbroughtaboutthisterrificonslaughtonCowperwoodwerenotalittledisturbedastotheeventualcharacterofthechildoftheirowncreation.HereatlastwasapublicopiniondefinitelyinimicaltoCowperwood;butherealsoweretheythemselves,tremendousprofit-holders,withadesireforjustsuchfavorsasCowperwoodhimselfhadexacted,deliberatelysettingouttokillthegoosethatcouldlaythegoldenegg.MensuchasHaeckelheimer,Gotloeb,Fishel,tremendouscapitalistsintheEastandforemostinthedirectoratesofhugetranscontinentallines,internationalbanking-houses,andthelike,wereamazedthatthenewspapersandtheanti-CowperwoodelementshouldhavegonesofarinChicago.
