Shortlyafterthenewlegislaturehadconvened,itsochancedthatacertainA.S.Rotherhite,publisheroftheSouthChicagoJournal,wasonedayaccidentallysittingasavisitorintheseatofastaterepresentativebythenameofClarenceMulligan.WhilesooccupiedRotherhitewasfamiliarlyslappedonthebackbyacertainSenatorLadrigo,ofMenard,andwasinvitedtocomeoutintotherotunda,where,posingasRepresentativeMulligan,hewasintroducedbySenatorLadrigotoastrangerbythenameofGerard.Thelatter,withbutfewpreliminaryremarks,beganasfollows:
"Mr.Mulligan,IwanttofixitwithyouinregardtothisSouthackbillwhichissoontocomeupinthehouse.Wehaveseventyvotes,butwewantninety.Thefactthatthebillhasgonetoasecondreadinginthesenateshowsourstrength.Iamauthorizedtocometotermswithyouthismorningifyouwouldlike.Yourvoteisworthtwothousanddollarstoyouthemomentthebillissigned."
Mr.Rotherhite,whohappenedtobeanewlyrecruitedmemberoftheOppositionpress,provedverycannyinthissituation.
