Thismatterofextendinghisfranchiseswasamostdifficultandintricatebusiness,however.Itinvolvedovercomingoroutwittingarecentandverytreacherousincreaseoflocalsentimentagainsthim.Thishadbeenoccasionedbyvariousdetailswhichrelatedtohiselevatedroads.Tothetwolinesalreadybuilthenowaddedathirdproperty,theUnionLoop.Thishepreparedtoconnectnotonlywithhisown,butwithotheroutsideelevatedproperties,chiefamongwhichwasMr.Schryhart’sSouthSide"L."Hewouldthenfarmouttohisenemiestheprivilegeofrunningtrainsonthisnewline.Howeverunwillingly,theywouldbeforcedtoavailthemselvesoftheprofferedopportunity,becausewithintheregioncoveredbythenewloopwasthetruecongestion—hereeveryonedesiredtocomeeitheronceortwiceduringthedayornight.BythismeansCowperwoodwouldsecuretohispropertyapayinginterestfromthestart.
