Cowperwoodhadalwaysbeeninterestedintheheavensandinthegiantmathematicalandphysicalmethodsofinterpretingthem.Itsohappenedthatthewar-likeplanet,withitssinisteraspect,wasjustatthistimetobeseenhanginginthewest,afieryred;andtheeasilyarousedpublicmindwasbeingstirredtoitsshallowdepthbyreflectionsandspeculationsregardingthefamouscanalsoftheluminary.
