Thelandwasflat—asflatasatable—withawaninggrowthofbrowngrassleftoverfromthepreviousyear,andstirringfaintlyinthemorningbreeze.Underneathweresignsofthenewgreen—theNewYear’sflagofitsdisposition.Forsomereasonacrystallineatmosphereenfoldedthedistanthazyoutlinesofthecity,holdingthelatterlikeaflyinamberandgivingitanartisticsubtletywhichtouchedhim.Alreadyadevoteeofart,ambitiousforconnoisseurship,whohadhadhisjoy,training,andsorrowoutofthecollectionhehadmadeandlostinPhiladelphia,heappreciatedalmosteverysuggestionofadelightfulpictureinnature.
Thetracks,sidebyside,werebecomingmoreandmorenumerous.Freight-carswereassembledherebythousandsfromallpartsofthecountry—yellow,red,blue,green,white.(Chicago,herecalled,alreadyhadthirtyrailroadsterminatinghere,asthoughitweretheendoftheworld.)Thelittlelowoneandtwostoryhouses,quitenewastowood,werefrequentlyunpaintedandalreadysmoky—inplacesgrimy.Atgrade-crossings,whereamblingstreet-carsandwagonsandmuddy-wheeledbuggieswaited,henotedhowflatthestreetswere,howunpaved,howsidewalkswentupanddownrhythmically—hereaflightofsteps,averitableplatformbeforeahouse,therealongstretchofboardslaidflatonthemudoftheprairieitself.
