Thishadbroughttothefore,onceandforall,asbyaflashoflightning,thewholeproblemofmassagainstclass,andhadgivenitsuchanairingasinviewofthecheerful,optimistic,almostinconsequentialAmericanmindhadnotpreviouslybeenpossible.Itchanged,quiteasaneruptionmight,thewholefaceofthecommerciallandscape.Manthoughtthereaftersomewhatmoreaccuratelyofnationalandcivicthings.Whatwasanarchism?Whatsocialism?Whatrightshadtherankandfile,anyhow,ineconomicandgovernmentaldevelopment?Suchwereinterestingquestions,andfollowingthebomb—whichactedasagreatstonecastinthewater—theseripple-ringsofthoughtwerestillwideningandemanatinguntiltheytookinsuchsupposedlyremoteandimpregnablequartersaseditorialoffices,banksandfinancialinstitutionsgenerally,andthehauntsofpoliticaldignitariesandtheirjobs.
Inthefaceofthis,however,Cowperwoodwasnotdisturbed.Hedidnotbelieveineitherthestrengthofthemassesortheirultimaterights,thoughhesympathizedwiththeconditionofindividuals,anddidbelievethatmenlikehimselfweresentintotheworldtobetterperfectitsmechanismandhabitableorder.Oftennow,inthesepreliminarydays,helookedatthelargecompaniesofmenwiththeirhorsesgatheredinandabouttheseveralcarbarnsofthecompany,andwonderedattheirstate.Somanyofthemweresodull.Theywereratherlikeanimals,patient,inartistic,hopeless.
