           SheforgotthatasyetshewasnotCowperwood’swife;shefeltherselftrulytobeso.Thestreets,setinmostinstanceswithapleasingcreamish-brownflagging,linedwithyoung,newlyplantedtrees,thelawnssowntosmoothgreengrass,thewindowsofthehousestrimmedwithbrightawningsandhungwithintricatelace,blowinginaJunebreeze,theroadwaysagray,grittymacadamallthesethingstouchedherfancy.OnonedrivetheyskirtedthelakeontheNorthShore,andAileen,contemplatingthechalky,bluish-greenwaters,thedistantsails,thegulls,andthenthenewbrighthomes,reflectedthatinallcertitudeshewouldsomedaybethemistressofoneofthesesplendidmansions.Howhaughtilyshewouldcarryherself;howshewoulddress!Theywouldhaveasplendidhouse,muchfiner,nodoubt,thanFrank’soldoneinPhiladelphia,withagreatball-roomanddining-roomwhereshecouldgivedancesanddinners,andwhereFrankandshewouldreceiveasthepeersoftheseChicagorichpeople.

           "Doyousupposewewilleverhaveahouseasfineasoneofthese,Frank?"sheaskedhim,longingly.

           "I’lltellyouwhatmyplanis,"hesaid."IfyoulikethisMichiganAvenuesectionwe’llbuyapieceofpropertyoutherenowandholdit.JustassoonasImaketherightconnectionshereandseewhatIamgoingtodowe’llbuildahousesomethingreallynicedon’tworry.Iwanttogetthisdivorcemattersettled,andthenwe’llbegin.Meanwhile,ifwehavetocomehere,we’dbetterliveratherquietly.
