Thedifficultywiththissituation,aswithallsuchwhereanindividualventuresthusbucaneeringlyontheseaofsex,isthepossibilityofthosestormswhichresultfrommisplacedconfidence,andfromourbuilt-upsystemofethicsrelatingtopropertyinwomen.ToCowperwood,however,whowasalawuntohimself,whoknewnolawexceptsuchasmightbeimposeduponhimbyhislackofabilitytothink,thispossibilityofentanglement,wrath,rage,pain,offerednoparticularobstacle.Itwasnotatallcertainthatanysuchthingwouldfollow.Wheretheaveragemanmighthavefoundonesuchliaisondifficulttomanage,Cowperwood,aswehaveseen,hadpreviouslyenteredonseveralsuchaffairsalmostsimultaneously;andnowhehadventuredonyetanother;inthelastinstancewithmuchgreaterfeelingandenthusiasm.Thepreviousaffairshadbeenemotionalmakeshiftsatbest—moreorlessidlephilanderingsinwhichhisdeepermoodsandfeelingswerenotconcerned.InthecaseofMrs.Sohlbergallthiswaschanged.Forthepresentatleastshewasreallyallinalltohim.
