AtthistimeCowperwood,oncemoreabroker—ostensiblyabroker’sagent—wasdoingbusinessinSouthThirdStreet,andrepresentingWingate&Co.on‘change.DuringthesixmonthswhichhadelapsedsincehehademergedfromtheEasternPenitentiaryhehadbeenquietlyresumingfinancial,ifnotsocial,relationswiththosewhohadknownhimbefore.
Furthermore,Wingate&Co.wereprospering,andhadbeenforsometime,afactwhichredoundedtohiscreditwiththosewhoknew.OstensiblyhelivedwithhiswifeinasmallhouseonNorthTwenty-firstStreet.InrealityheoccupiedabachelorapartmentonNorthFifteenthStreet,towhichAileenoccasionallyrepaired.
