Thehorrorofidlenessinsilenceandinacellscarcelylargeenoughtoturnaroundincomfortablyhadalreadybeguntocreepoverhim,andthethoughtofbeingabletoseeWingateandStegerfrequently,andtohavehismailreachhim,afteratime,untamperedwith,wasagreatrelief.Hewastohavehisownunderwear,silkandwool—thankGod!—andperhapstheywouldlethimtakeofftheseshoesafterawhile.Withthesemodificationsandatrade,andperhapsthelittleyardwhichDesmashadreferredto,hislifewouldbe,ifnotideal,atleasttolerable.Theprisonwasstillaprison,butitlookedasthoughitmightnotbesomuchofaterrortohimasobviouslyitmustbetomany.
DuringthetwoweeksinwhichCowperwoodwasinthe"mannerssquad,"incareofChapin,helearnednearlyasmuchasheeverlearnedofthegeneralnatureofprisonlife;forthiswasnotanordinarypenitentiaryinthesensethattheprisonyard,theprisonsquad,theprisonlock-step,theprisondining-room,andprisonassociatedlabormaketheordinarypenitentiary.Therewas,forhimandformostofthoseconfinedthere,nogeneralprisonlifewhatsoever.Thelargemajorityweresupposedtoworksilentlyintheircellsattheparticulartasksassignedthem,andnottoknowanythingoftheremainderofthelifewhichwentonaroundthem,theruleofthisprisonbeingsolitaryconfinement,andfewbeingpermittedtoworkatthelimitednumberofoutsidemenialtasksprovided.
