           "IwasattheCalligans,"repliedAileen."That’seasyenough.Mamawon’tthinkanythingaboutit."

           "It’sasoreheartIhave,Aileen.Ihopeye’llthinkoveryourwaysanddobetter.I’llnotsayanythin’morenow."

           Aileenreturnedtoherroom,decidedlytriumphantinhermoodforthemoment,andthingswentonapparentlyintheButlerhouseholdasbefore.ButthosewhoimaginethatthisdefeatpermanentlyalteredtheattitudeofButlertowardCowperwoodaremistaken.
