Itamusedhimtoheartheethicalandemotionalplatitudesoflawyers,toseehowreadilytheywouldlie,steal,prevaricate,misrepresentinalmostanycauseandforanypurpose.Greatlawyersweremerelygreatunscrupuloussubtleties,likehimself,sittingbackindark,close-wovenlairslikespidersandawaitingtheapproachofunwaryhumanflies.Lifewasatbestadark,inhuman,unkind,unsympatheticstrugglebuiltofcrueltiesandthelaw,anditslawyerswerethemostdespicablerepresentativesofthewholeunsatisfactorymess.Stillheusedlawashewoulduseanyothertraporweapontoridhimofahumanill;andasforlawyers,hepickedthemupashewouldanycluborknifewherewithtodefendhimself.Hehadnoparticularrespectforanyofthem—notevenHarperSteger,thoughhelikedhim.Theyweretoolstobeused—knives,keys,clubs,anythingyouwill;butnothingmore.Whentheywerethroughtheywerepaidanddropped—putasideandforgotten.Asforjudges,theyweremerelyincompetentlawyers,atarule,whowereshelvedbysomefortunateturnofchance,andwhowouldnot,inalllikelihood,beasefficientasthelawyerswhopleadedbeforethemiftheywereputinthesameposition.Hehadnorespectforjudges—heknewtoomuchaboutthem.Heknewhowoftentheyweresycophants,politicalclimbers,politicalhacks,tools,time-servers,judicialdoor-matslyingbeforethefinanciallyandpoliticallygreatandpowerfulwhousedthemassuch.Judgeswerefools,asweremostotherpeopleinthisdusty,shiftyworld.
