           "Um-m,youdon’ttellme,"observedSenatorSimpson,thoughtfully,strokinghismouthwithhispalehand.

           "Yes,Icanconfirmthat,"saidMollenhauer,quietly,seeinghisownlittleprivateplanofbrowbeatingCowperwoodoutofhisstreet-railwaysharesgoingglimmering."IhadatalkwithStenertheotherdayaboutthisverymatter,andhetoldmethatCowperwoodhadbeentryingtoforcehimtogivehimthreehundredthousanddollarsmore,andthatwhenherefusedCowperwoodmanagedtogetsixtythousanddollarsfurtherwithouthisknowledgeorconsent."

           "Howcouldhedothat?"askedSenatorSimpson,incredulously.Mollenhauerexplainedthetransaction.

           Oh,"saidtheSenator,whenMollenhauerhadfinished,"thatindicatesarathersharpperson,doesn’tit?Andthecertificatesarenotinthesinking-fund,eh?"

           "They’renot,"chimedinButler,withconsiderableenthusiasm.
