Whileshehadyieldedtohisyouthfulenthusiasmforherafterherhusband’sdeath,hehadonlysincelearnedthatshewasanaturalconservatorofpublicmorals—thecoldpurityofthesnowdriftinsofarastheworldmightsee,combinedattimeswiththemurkymoodofthewanton.Andyet,ashehadalsolearned,shewasashamedofthepassionthatattimessweptanddominatedher.ThisirritatedCowperwood,asitwouldalwaysirritateanystrong,acquisitive,direct-seeingtemperament.Whilehehadnodesiretoacquaintthewholeworldwithhisfeelings,whyshouldtherebeconcealmentbetweenthem,oratleastmentalevasionofafactwhichphysicallyshesubscribedto?Whydoonethingandthinkanother?Tobesure,shewasdevotedtohiminherquietway,notpassionately(ashelookedbackhecouldnotsaythatshehadeverbeenthat),butintellectually.Duty,assheunderstoodit,playedagreatpartinthis.Shewasdutiful.Andthenwhatpeoplethought,whatthetime-spiritdemanded—thesewerethegreatthings.Aileen,onthecontrary,wasprobablynotdutiful,anditwasobviousthatshehadnotemperamentalconnectionwithcurrentconvention.Nodoubtshehadbeenaswellinstructedasmanyanothergirl,butlookather.Shewasnotobeyingherinstructions.
Inthenextthreemonthsthisrelationshiptookonamoreflagrantform.Aileen,knowingfullwellwhatherparentswouldthink,howunspeakableinthemindofthecurrentworldwerethethoughtsshewasthinking,persisted,nevertheless,insothinkingandlonging.
