Therooms,whichwerenowslowlybeingdecoratedandfurnishedinperiodstyleswereverysignificantinthattheyenlargedandstrengthenedFrankCowperwood’sideaoftheworldofartingeneral.Itwasanenlighteningandagreeableexperience—onewhichmadeforartisticandintellectualgrowth—tohearEllsworthexplainatlengththestylesandtypesofarchitectureandfurniture,thenatureofwoodsandornamentsemployed,thequalitiesandpeculiaritiesofhangings,draperies,furniturepanels,anddoorcoverings.Ellsworthwasastudentofdecorationaswellasofarchitecture,andinterestedintheartistictasteoftheAmericanpeople,whichhefanciedwouldsomedayhaveasplendidoutcome.HewasweariedtodeathoftheprevalentRomanesquecompositecombinationsofcountryandsuburbanvilla.Thetimewasripeforsomethingnew.Hescarcelyknewwhatitwouldbe;butthisthathehaddesignedforCowperwoodandhisfatherwasatleastdifferent,ashesaid,whileatthesametimebeingreserved,simple,andpleasing.Itwasinmarkedcontrasttotherestofthearchitectureofthestreet.Cowperwood’sdining-room,reception-room,conservatory,andbutler’spantryhehadputonthefirstfloor,togetherwiththegeneralentry-hall,staircase,andcoat-roomunderthestairs.Forthesecondfloorhehadreservedthelibrary,generalliving-room,parlor,andasmallofficeforCowperwood,togetherwithaboudoirforLillian,connectedwithadressing-roomandbath.
