Neverthelesswepassedthedreadedcapewithoutmuchroughweather,andinthecourseofafewweeksafterwardsweresailinggently,beforeawarmtropicalbreeze,overthePacificOcean.Thusweproceededonourvoyage—sometimesboundingmerrilybeforeafairbreeze;atothertimesfloatingcalmlyontheglassywaveandfishingforthecuriousinhabitantsofthedeep,allofwhich,althoughthesailorsthoughtlittleofthem,werestrange,andinteresting,andverywonderfultome.
AtlastwecameamongtheCoralIslandsofthePacific;andIshallneverforgetthedelightwithwhichIgazed—whenwechancedtopassone—atthepurewhite,dazzlingshores,andtheverdantpalm-trees,whichlookedbrightandbeautifulinthesunshine.Andoftendidwethreelongtobelandedonone,imaginingthatweshouldcertainlyfindperfecthappinessthere!Ourwishwasgrantedsoonerthanweexpected.
Onenight,soonafterweenteredthetropics,anawfulstormburstuponourship.Thefirstsquallofwindcarriedawaytwoofourmasts,andleftonlytheforemaststanding.Eventhis,however,wasmorethanenough,forwedidnotdaretohoistaragofsailonit.
