           Ishallsaylittleaboutthefirstpartofourvoyage.Wehadtheusualamountofroughweatherandcalm;alsowesawmanystrangefishrollinginthesea,andIwasgreatlydelightedonedaybyseeingashoalofflying-fishdartoutofthewaterandskimthroughtheairaboutafootabovethesurface.Theywerepursuedbydolphins,whichfeedonthem;andoneflying-fish,initsterror,flewovertheship,struckontherigging,andfelluponthedeck.Itswingswerejustfinselongated;andwefoundthattheycouldneverflyfaratatime,andnevermountedintotheairlikebirds,butskimmedalongthesurfaceofthesea.JackandIhaditfordinner,andfounditremarkablygood.

           WhenweapproachedCapeHorn,atthesouthernextremityofAmerica,theweatherbecameverycoldandstormy,andthesailorsbegantotellstoriesaboutthefuriousgalesandthedangersofthatterriblecape.

           "CapeHorn,"saidone,"isthemosthorribleheadlandIeverdoubled.I’vesailedroundittwicealready,andbothtimestheshipwasa’mostblow’douto’thewater."
