Therewereatleasttwohundredofthem,bothboysandgirls,allofwhomwerecladinnoothergarmentsthantheirownglossylittleblackskins,exceptthemaro,orstripofcloth,roundtheloinsoftheboys,andaveryshortpetticoatorkiltonthegirls.Theydidnotallplayatthesamegame,butamusedthemselvesindifferentgroups.
Onebandwasbusilyengagedinagameexactlysimilartoourblindman’sbuff.Anothersetwerewalkingonstilts,whichraisedthechildrenthreefeetfromtheground.Theywereveryexpertatthisamusement,andseldomtumbled.InanotherplaceIobservedagroupofgirlsstandingtogether,andapparentlyenjoyingthemselvesverymuch;soIwentuptoseewhattheyweredoing,andfoundthattheywereopeningtheireyelidswiththeirfingerstilltheireyesappearedofanenormoussize,andthenthrustingpiecesofstrawbetweentheupperandlowerlids,acrosstheeyeball,tokeeptheminthatposition!Thisseemedtome,Imustconfess,averyfoolishaswellasdangerousamusement.Nevertheless,thechildrenseemedtobegreatlydelightedwiththehideousfacestheymade.Iponderedthissubjectagooddeal,andthoughtthatiflittlechildrenknewhowsillytheyseemedtogrown-uppeoplewhen,theymakefaces,theywouldnotbesofondofdoingit.Inanotherplacewereanumberofboysengagedinflyingkites;andIcouldnothelpwonderingthatsomeofthegamesofthoselittlesavagesshouldbesoliketoourown,althoughtheyhadneverseenusatplay.
