           Mr.Bertramsetofffor————,andMissCrawfordwaspreparedtofindagreatchasmintheirsociety,andtomisshimdecidedlyinthemeetingswhichwerenowbecomingalmostdailybetweenthefamilies;andontheiralldiningtogetherattheParksoonafterhisgoing,sheretookherchosenplacenearthebottomofthetable,fullyexpectingtofeelamostmelancholydifferenceinthechangeofmasters.Itwouldbeaveryflatbusiness,shewassure.Incomparisonwithhisbrother,Edmundwouldhavenothingtosay.Thesoupwouldbesentroundinamostspiritlessmanner,winedrankwithoutanysmilesoragreeabletrifling,andthevenisoncutupwithoutsupplyingonepleasantanecdoteofanyformerhaunch,orasingleentertainingstory,about“myfriendsuchaone.”Shemusttrytofindamusementinwhatwaspassingattheupperendofthetable,andinobservingMr.Rushworth,whowasnowmakinghisappearanceatMansfieldforthefirsttimesincetheCrawfords’arrival.Hehadbeenvisitingafriendintheneighbouringcounty,andthatfriendhavingrecentlyhadhisgroundslaidoutbyanimprover,Mr.Rushworthwasreturnedwithhisheadfullofthesubject,andveryeagertobeimprovinghisownplaceinthesameway;andthoughnotsayingmuchtothepurpose,couldtalkofnothingelse.Thesubjecthadbeenalreadyhandledinthedrawing-room;itwasrevivedinthedining-parlour.
